The Question
one question, arguedWhose price actually holds in the back half of 2026 — the house raising wholesale, or the houses that just froze their flagships flat?
The Verdict
The positionIt's flipped. Buffalo Trace, the bottles people actually chase and resell, is holding its list price flat or lower. Heaven Hill is doing the opposite — a 4-6% bump on its core bottles, right as grain gets cheaper, the barrel tax winds down, and resale prices soften. Raising your wholesale price while cutting your own new-make whiskey 15% isn't strength, it's protecting the take on a shrinking pile — and it's the first sticker a store peels off once buyers start lining the two houses up side by side.
The Evidence
8 points · 2026-05-06 to 2026-07-15Assembled from the daily brief’s own archive across months — the part no single day’s news can show. Every line is dated so it can be checked.
So What
by where you sitThe same week means different things to a distiller, a retailer and a collector.
The Call
dated and falsifiableThree predictions with dates on them, published so they can be wrong.
By 30 Sep 2026At least one national retailer will feature a Heaven Hill core SKU at or below its pre-14-July shelf price, showing the wholesale increase did not fully pass through.
By 31 Oct 2026Buffalo Trace/Sazerac will announce no general wholesale increase on core Buffalo Trace, Weller or Eagle Rare beyond the already-locked BTAC.
By 31 Dec 2026MGP new-distillate contract pricing will print at or below $14.82/proof-gallon again in a quarterly disclosure, undercutting any cost-driven case for the mid-shelf increase.
Calls are never edited after publication. When one misses it is marked in corrections and stays on this page.
The Standing Position
reopening 2026-07-10Every issue reopens the argument behind it and either defends it on the evidence since, or concedes it.
DEFENDEDOne week, and every barrel-proof cadence bottle I named moved at flat MSRP: Larceny Barrel Proof B926 restocked nationally at an unchanged $69.99 on 17 July, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C926 shipped at $74.99 on 13 July, Weller Full Proof 2026 held flat at $54.99. Michter's ran its Toasted Barrel Finish walk-up-only at $99.99, and Buffalo Trace put 1994 O.F.C. on a gift-shop line at $299.99 — the working-premium tier sold direct, no application. The very top still carries a real gap: a 2019 Stagg cleared $2,850 at auction. Tellingly, Heaven Hill lifted its core portfolio 4–6% the same week it held the barrel-proofs flat — price can move on everyday and on trophies but not in the mid-tier, which is exactly the two-market split I claimed.
Reconstructed issue. This issue was not published in its own week; it is built from what the record held on the date above its masthead, and from nothing later.
How this is built
The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
