01

The Question

one question, argued

Does American whiskey still have pricing power — or is it raising list prices on the handful of bottles it controls while quietly marking down everything people actually buy?

02

The Verdict

The positionThe only bottles going up in price are the allocated ones nobody can buy at the sticker price anyway. Bulk whiskey is getting cheaper, and the bottles people actually pull off the shelf are getting cheaper too — and producers are cutting both the price and the amount they make. There's no across-the-board price muscle here. It's strong at the very top, strong at the very bottom, and the middle is being left to rot.

+22.2% vs -21.7%
Buffalo Trace hiked Weller 12 to $54.99 in the same fortnight Heaven Hill cut Evan Williams BiB to $17.99 — the barbell in one line.

The Evidence

Assembled from the daily brief’s own archive across months — the part no single day’s news can show. Every line is dated so it can be checked.

The same week means different things to a distiller, a retailer and a collector.

The Call

dated and falsifiable

Three predictions with dates on them, published so they can be wrong.

By 30 Sep 2026At least one other Big 4 producer (Brown-Forman, Beam Suntory, or Sazerac) posts a list-price CUT on a core sub-$25 bourbon SKU, confirming Heaven Hill is not alone.

By 31 Dec 2026Buffalo Trace's fall BTAC cohort holds its +15-22% MSRPs through the lottery cycle with no public rollback — allocated hikes stick even as the middle deflates.

By 31 Dec 2026MGP's next new-fill contract price prints at or below $14.82/proof-gallon, extending the input-cost deflation another quarter.

Calls are never edited after publication. When one misses it is marked in corrections and stays on this page.

The Standing Position

reopening 2026-05-08

Every issue reopens the argument behind it and either defends it on the evidence since, or concedes it.

DEFENDEDOne week, and the split moved from auction-versus-shelf to inside a single producer's price letter. On 11 May Heaven Hill cut Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond from $22.99 to $17.99 — a 21.7% everyday retail drop, six times the 3.4% wholesale cut I logged 6 May — and in the same breath raised Elijah Craig Barrel Proof $10 to $79.99. On 13 May Buffalo Trace lifted the whole BTAC allocated cohort 15-22%: Stagg +15.4%, Weller 12 +22.2%, Eagle Rare 17 and Sazerac 18 +18.2% each. The tiers are not converging toward a bottom; the gap is widening in the distillers' own MSRPs. Decoupling, confirmed. The record holds — glut priced at the front, scarcity at the top — no reversal.

Reconstructed issue. This issue was not published in its own week; it is built from what the record held on the date above its masthead, and from nothing later.

How this is built

The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
