01

The Question

one question, argued

Are the stacked Father's Day pre-allocation windows real scarcity — or a device to lock orders before the softness becomes visible?

02

The Verdict

The positionIt's a way to lock in orders before the softness shows. They're squeezing the order windows tighter and shutting them "before the reviews arrive" — because if you waited and watched the resale prices and the bulk barrel market, you'd be told not to pre-commit. Distillers have stopped selling bottles and started selling deadlines, and the deadline is the product because the scarcity under it is thinning, not tightening.

-1.0 pt
The matched-basket secondary floor turned DOWN May-to-June (42.5% to 41.6%) — the scarcity the pre-order windows are selling is not actually tightening.

The Evidence

Assembled from the daily brief’s own archive across months — the part no single day’s news can show. Every line is dated so it can be checked.

So What

by where you sit

The same week means different things to a distiller, a retailer and a collector.

The Call

dated and falsifiable

Three predictions with dates on them, published so they can be wrong.

By 30 Sep 2026At least one 2026 barrel-proof Father's Day release (Larceny A926 or EC C926) prints on secondary below its raised MSRP within 60 days of shipping.

By 15 Aug 2026Wild Turkey Master's Keep Triumph 2026 is still buyable at some specialty accounts past its June 15 'window close,' proving the deadline was pacing, not a sellout.

By 31 Dec 2026The next matched-basket secondary floor reading prints below June's 41.6%, extending the softening the compressed windows are racing to get ahead of.

Calls are never edited after publication. When one misses it is marked in corrections and stays on this page.

The Standing Position

reopening 2026-05-29

Every issue reopens the argument behind it and either defends it on the evidence since, or concedes it.

PARTLYOne week, and the MSRP leg held while the spread leg cracked. Buffalo Trace confirmed the BTAC hikes on 30 May — Stagg $129.99, Weller $124.99, Eagle Rare 17 $109.99, its first increase since 2022 — so the rent really is being routed onto Sazerac's P&L, on purpose. But my compression claim took a hit: William Larue Weller 2026 formed a $1,900–$2,100 pre-release secondary floor on 3 June against that $124.99 MSRP, a roughly 15x spread that is not narrowing. The flipper still pockets nearly all of it before the bottle ships. What settles this is my 30 November call — whether the 2026 cohort clears below the 2024 premium-over-MSRP on auction composites. It hasn't yet.

Reconstructed issue. This issue was not published in its own week; it is built from what the record held on the date above its masthead, and from nothing later.

How this is built

The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
