The Question
one question, arguedIs American whiskey shrinking or growing right now?
The Verdict
The positionBoth, and that's the problem. Production is being cut everywhere you look, bulk demand is falling off a cliff, and the same bottles that traded on the secondary market a month ago are selling for less today. Meanwhile the brands are still pouring concrete for new rickhouses and raising prices as if none of that were happening. Somebody's math is wrong, and this week's distributor bankruptcy is the first bill coming due.
The Evidence
8 points · 2026-05-06 to 2026-07-27 to 2026-06-09Assembled from the daily brief’s own archive across months — the part no single day’s news can show. Every line is dated so it can be checked.
So What
by where you sitThe same week means different things to a distiller, a retailer and a collector.
The Call
dated and falsifiableThree predictions with dates on them, published so they can be wrong.
By 30 Nov 2026MGP reports another quarter of YoY bulk-whiskey revenue decline in double digits when it files Q3 earnings.
By 31 Dec 2026The matched-basket secondary floor for the same tracked bottles falls below 33%, extending the June-July drop for a third straight reading.
By 31 Dec 2026At least one more national or regional spirits distributor files for bankruptcy or is acquired under distress.
Calls are never edited after publication. When one misses it is marked in corrections and stays on this page.
What I’m Watching
the publisher’s own readWhat I'm watching is the resale premium, because it's the number that tells you whether this is a correction or a crash. It's dropped from 41.3% to 36.6% in a month — call that the buyer's report card on what distillers are charging. If that number keeps sliding another 4 or 5 points by the next Whisky Auctioneer close in September, the bankruptcy filed this week won't be the last one, and some of these brands are going to have to eat a price cut they haven't announced yet. If it flattens instead, I'll admit the buyer overreacted and the distillers timed this better than I gave them credit for.
How this is built
The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
