The Question

one question, argued

If Kentucky just cut how much whiskey it makes by an eighth, why does every distillery keep launching more expensive bottles?

02

The Verdict

The positionBecause the cuts and the launches aren't talking to each other — production planning is reading a shortage that pricing hasn't priced in yet. The stuff coming out right now (Bardstown's $139.99 releases, Maker's Mark at $175) was distilled and warehoused years before anyone idled a still, so the launches are just working through old inventory while the resale market — the only place real-time demand shows up — is already telling you buyers won't pay up for it.

36.6%
the same bottles' resale premium over MSRP in July, down from 42.5% in May — buyers are paying less over sticker for the exact bottles brands are raising sticker prices on

The Evidence

Assembled from the daily brief’s own archive across months — the part no single day’s news can show. Every line is dated so it can be checked.

The Call

dated and falsifiable

Three predictions with dates on them, published so they can be wrong.

By 31 Dec 2026The matched-basket secondary floor falls below 35%, extending its third straight monthly decline.

By 31 Dec 2026At least one of Buffalo Trace, Heaven Hill or Wild Turkey either freezes or reverses a 2026 MSRP increase on an allocated release.

By 31 Mar 2027Beam Suntory's Clermont restart slips again past its stated 'early 2027' full-capacity target.

Calls are never edited after publication. When one misses it is marked in corrections and stays on this page.

What I’m Watching

the publisher’s own read

What I'm watching is the matched-basket secondary floor next month. It's gone 42.5% to 41.6% to 36.6% over the summer — one more drop and that's a trend, not noise, and it tells you the resale market has stopped absorbing these price hikes entirely. I'd also keep an eye on Maker's Mark's $175 cellar blend once it's actually on shelves after September 1 — if it moves at that number in this climate, I'm wrong about demand cracking. And watch whether Beam gets Clermont back to full output before early 2027, because if that happens fast, the industry decided it cut too hard, not too late.

How this is built

The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
