The Question
one question, arguedIs the industry's price-it-up, make-less strategy still working, or are brands raising prices into a market that's stopped chasing them?
The Verdict
The positionIt's stopped working. Distillers are cutting how much they make, the same allocated bottles are trading for less over sticker than they were two months ago, and brands just kept raising prices anyway. Brown-Forman turning down $32 a share twice while its own sales slide is the same bet, just in company form.
The Evidence

So What
by where you sitThe same week means different things to a distiller, a retailer and a collector.

What I’m Watching
the publisher’s own readWhat I'm watching is Brown-Forman's next quarterly filing. The company said no to $32 a share twice, then its CEO walked out the door the same week Jack Daniel's posted another sales dip. That's not a coincidence, that's a board getting nervous about a bet it already made. If Sazerac's offer comes back on the table, or gets floated again by anyone at a lower number, that tells you the "we're worth more alone" argument just broke. If Brown-Forman reports flat-to-up sales next quarter and the board stays quiet, I'll admit the discipline is paying off. Right now I don't think it is.
How this is built
The Wantage takes one question the trade is actually arguing about and answers it with evidence assembled across months, not a recap of the week. Every figure comes from the American Whiskey Industry Brief’s own daily record, and the monthly measurements behind it are published in The Gauge. Where the archive disagrees with itself, the figure is withheld rather than asserted.
